Re: and some of you guys thought ' the Dead' were bad |
In 1992 I was helping a friend sell some posters that he had made. He had blown up tickets to small poster size and laminated them for each of the shows. It was a cool idea and sold well. Anyways at 2 separate venues his merchandise was seized on lot by some form of security/police because the name The Grateful Dead was on the blown up tickets. Somebody must have requested that?

Re: and some of you guys thought ' the Dead' were bad |
there's this guy on you tube that has a ton of videos showing licks to a bunch of songs. There's one where's he's talking about selling t-shirts at a show back in the 70's and some security guy working for the Dead says he can't sell them without permission so the guy asks to talk to Jerry and they actually take him inside while the band is soundchecking. The guy yells up to Jerry on stage and asks him and Jerry goes " man, I don't give a f*ck what you do"
it's pretty funny the way the guy tells it/ Wish I could link it but our I.T. dept. finally clamped down.

Re: and some of you guys thought ' the Dead' were bad |
come on, just because you dont like them doesn't mean they stink. I saw them at Red Rocks in 93 and 94 and they were certainly better than anything the Dead were doing at that time. I never really listen to them but I can respect their talent even if most of their songs are retarded lyrically

Re: and some of you guys thought ' the Dead' were bad |
That's my problem with Phish-- the lyrics. Those guys are trained musicians who are extremely creative and talented and who really are able to do something unique. But except for 2 or 3 of their tunes, it's impossible for me to connect to the songs on an emotional level.
That didnt stop me from seeing them 15 times in college though.

Re: and some of you guys thought ' the Dead' were bad |
IMHO,
My problem with Phish is not their lyrics, it is their contrived, and forced "jamming" style.
I couldn't begin to quote a lyric, or even recall a riff these guys have done. I have purchased a couple of their CD's in an effort to give them a chance, but they were too painful to listen to, and the CD's now gather dust in a corner.
They should crack down on bootleggers, no need for this stuff to get spread around any more than it is.

Re: and some of you guys thought ' the Dead' were bad |
You don't need words to connect w/ Miles Davis. Do you?
I understand your criticism. It's true, there's no Hunteresque poetry coming from Phish, and they don't jam like the Grateful Dead did. It's better that way. We all know that cover bands blow(me). (can I get a hey now??)
Phish has a different approach to most of their lyrics and I find many of them highly entertaining. Often times Phish's whimsical lyrics are juxtaposed by dark and heavy music, which is just grand. I don't feel the love in Phish music like I do from GD music....but these are different artists in different times.
Trey's solo efforts are also solid and his short-lived group Oysterhead w/ Les Claypool and Stuart Copeland was a powerhouse! Oysterhead 5/4/2000 is widely traded and is worth obtaining.
Can you dig it? Does it matter?

IT IS EASY TO TAKE SHOTS |
it is easy to take shots at the phish. it is easy to take shots at the grateful dead, or really anyone or thing you care to tear down... "dylan? i cant STAAAAAAND that guy... he cant sing, he doesn't play any guitar solos, and his songs have too many words in them....."
the important point here is that they ARE NOT a GD imitation musically and yet they attract a similar crowd: people looking for something other than just a concert.
think he is a weasel or not, trey can spit fire on the guitar, and mike and fish are a first rate bomb dropping rhythm team (not to discredit page). there are many instances when they rage..... YEAH, they're gonna sing some shitty lyrics in a whiny white guy voice. and for this band, the more absurd the lyrics the better... i REALLY don;t like it when they try to have a serious poetic/narrative line... the trey "SONGS" -- those are generally not very good....

Re: and some of you guys thought ' the Dead' were bad |
I think Oysterhead is the best thing Trey has been involved with... then again, the star of that power trio is the drummer.
